The Harlem Renaissance started right after World War I. They say that W.E.B Du Bois initiated the Harlem Renissance. The Harlem Renissance was a cultural movement based on pride in the African-American experience. The African -Americans didn't want to be treated as second-class citizens,and I think that this poem that was written by W.E.B. Du Bois says it all.
We sing:This country of ours,despite all it's better souls have done and dreamed,is yet a shameful land. Itlynches.... Itdisfranchises {deprives people of the vote}it's own citizens.... It encouragesignorance.It has never really tried to educate the Black. . . . It insults us. . . . We return. Wereturn from fighting.
We make way for Democracy!We saved it in France,and by the Great Jehovah,we will save it in the United States of America,or know the reason why. i think that this poem says that ...here they come right from fighting the world war ,and they were treated the same as when they left.The main reason why the blacks left for war was so they could get the respect that they deserved.They wanted equallity and if I didn't get what I earned I would be mad too.
